Officer injured by Dog Bite

Officer was investigating previous dog bite

On Monday, 8/14/2017, at approximately 2:30pm, a Norton Police Officer took a report of a person bitten by a Pit Bull dog on Union Road. The Pit Bull went through a wire fence into the neighbor's yard, who had a small dog, and bit the dog's owner. The laceration did not require immediate emergency attention and the victim was planning to go to hospital on their own.

Norton Animal Control was notified and it was determined that the dog would be quarantined. As the owner of the Pit Bull brought the dog out on a leash, the dog overpowered the owner, pulling away and attacking the officer, biting him and latching onto his forearm.

After fighting the dog off, the officer was bleeding profusely and quickly applied his tourniquet, which was able to stop the bleeding. He was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital by Norton Fire Rescue where he was treated and later released.

The officer remains out of work pending further evaluation. The dog was taken by Norton Animal Control.

Names of the officer and dog owner are not being released at this time.  The incident remains under investigation.
