Motorist struck a dump truck in a work zone

Operator charged with operating under the influence of alcohol-2nd offense

On Wednesday, 10/16/2019, at approximately 11pm, a motorist struck a dump truck in a work zone on West Main Street in Norton. The vehicle, operated by Stefano Masciarelli, age 21, of Easton, was traveling east on West Main Street when it approached the work zone and struck the rear of a parked dump truck at the site. The work zone is clearly marked with signs, cones, extensive lighting, police vehicles and several detail officers. Norton Police Detail Officers attempted to stop the vehicle after it crashed, as it continued to travel east and turn right onto Taunton Avenue. Ptlm, Kevin Schleicher, while working the detail, attempted to stop the vehicle with a Norton Police cruiser, but the operator failed to stop. The low speed pursuit continued onto Barrows Street and then Summer Street where it finally stopped.

Masciarelli was placed under arrest by Ptlm. Schleicher and was charged with operating under the influence of alcohol-2nd offense, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving property damage, failure to stop for police, marked lanes violation and drinking from an open container.

Masciarelli was released on bail and will appear in the Attleboro District Court this morning.

The vehicle had significant damage, but no major damage to the dump truck. No one was injured in the incident.
