The mission of the Open Space Committee includes acquiring land to protect wildlife habitat, provide outdoor recreational opportunities, and protect public natural resources. The Open Space Committee is in charge of updating the Open Space and Recreation Plan, prioritization and recommendations for Open Space parcels, and involvement in open space projects. |
Norton has a moderate amount of land dedicated to open space and recreation scattered throughout the town. Open space land is represented in a wide variety of places. They are the ball fields, public meeting places, conservation properties, areas of historic interest, scenic areas, water supply lands, farmlands, parks and wildlife habitat areas. Open space preservation is important if the town is to retain its character and avoid excessive urbanization. Open space also serves a vital role as buffer between land uses, for flood control, and as habitats for desirable plants and wildlife.
