Police investigate car into Norton Reservoir

On Thursday,  1/19/17, at 11:38am, Norton Police and Fire Departments responded to the Norton Reservoir for a report of a vehicle that entered the water with a passenger inside.  The vehicle, operated by Christopher Cantwell, age 51, of Norton, was heading north on Mansfield Avenue and entered the water in the area of Smith Street.  It then traveled approximately 100 feet from the shore where Cantwell was able to exit the vehicle.  Several witnesses called 911 to report the incident and at least two, including an off-duty Norton police and fire dispatcher, entered the water in an attempt to assist Cantwell.  Cantwell was too far into the water, however, for the witnesses to retrieve him.  Two Norton Firefighters entered the water and swam out to Cantwell, retrieving him and brought him to shore.  They were also able to check the vehicle to ensure no other possible passengers were present.  Cantwell was transported to Sturdy Hospital for treatment from being exposed to the frigid water.  No other injuries were reported.  The vehicle was able to be removed from the water as well.  The incident remains under investigation by Norton Police.
