Floodplain Management Program

Q: What is a Flood Zone?

A: Flood hazard areas identified on the Flood Insurance Rate Map are identified as a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA). SFHA are defined as the area that will be inundated by the flood event having a 1-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year. The 1-percent annual chance flood is also referred to as the base flood or 100-year flood.

The SFHA in the Town of Norton are represented by Zone A , Zone AE, or Zone X.

Q: Is my property or house in a Floodplain or Flood Zone?

A: The Town of Norton has a local GIS Viewer with Floodplain Information Norton MAPGEO, while FEMA has an interactive Floodplain Map Viewer, and the Conservation Department maintains flood records and resources (Flood Insurance Studies, Flood Insurance Rate Maps, etc.) which can be reviewed by the public. Please coordinate with your local Floodplain Administrator/ Conservation Department for inquiries or requests. Request Form - Floodplain Inquiry

Q: Do I need approval or should I contact the town for work on my property in a Floodplain or Flood Zone?

A: The Town recommends that landowners or applicants consult the Local Floodplain Administrator (508-285-0290) prior to initiating any proposed land disturbance, development, or residential improvement projects located in a floodplain. Permits are required to ensure that proposed development projects meet the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program and the community's floodplain management ordinance. Additional guidance is provided below for local landowners and residents.

Q:  Who should I contact for proposed development in a Floodplain or Flood Zone?

A: For all inquiries or development which may increase flood risk, please contact the Local Floodplain Administrator, as they are tasked with directing and overseeing compliance with the NFIP regulations.

Please feel free to call 508-285-0290 or fill-out a Request Form - Floodplain Inquiry   with any questions or concerns for proposed work in floodplain or SFHA, and be advised that coordination with other Town Departments may be required or requested by the Local Floodplain Administrator.
