On 3/28/2010, at 5:14am, Norton Police responded to Cumberland Farms on 246 Mansfield Avenue for a report of a hold-up alarm. The store clerk informed the dispatcher that two male subjects fled the property in a dark colored Ford Explorer operated by a female. The clerk then stated that the vehicle stopped on Mansfield Avenue and the two subjects exited the vehicle, heading north on Mansfield Avenue on foot.
Sgt. Robert Whitfiield, Sgt. Jon Goodwin, and Ptlm. Kevin Schleicher Jr. responded to the scene. After the initial investigation, police discovered the vehicle was registered to a female from Alder Road, Norton. The clerk further stated the two male subjects entered the store, began a verbal altercation with the clerk before threatening him, pushing him, and entering the area behind the cash register. The clerk stated the subjects removed a few items from the shelf behind the register and fled the store. No cash was taken.
Police then observed the suspect vehicle on Alder Road. Police approached the vehicle and attempted to speak with the occupants. One of the male subjects, identified as TYLER BASSETT, age 17, of 53 South Street, South Easton, led police on a foot pursuit onto Falls Road, ending in his arrest. After further investigation, police discovered that the second male, identified as MICHAEL WHELEN, age 20, of 12 Pratt Street, Mansfield, had fled the vehicle prior to police arrival.
BASSETT was charged with Unarmed Robbery, Resisting Arrest, Assault and Battery on a Police Officer, and Possession of a Class D Substance-Marijuana with Intent to Distribute. He was released on $500 cash bail and will be arraigned in Attleboro District Court on Monday.
WHELEN will be charged with Unarmed Robbery and Assault and Battery.
The female operator was not charged.
